HBR Dumbarton Ltd.
As part of the Motorcycle MOT test in Dumbarton, our qualified staff will check the following.
Lights are checked for security and correct colour of headlamp, rear lights, indicators and reflectors. Also the headlamp will be checked to see if the aim is correct. Of the 20% of so of motorcycles that fail their MOTs, more than half do so due to defective lights.
To increase your chances of passing first time, it is therefore wise to check the
lights yourself before taking the MOT test. To pass, your bike headlights and tail
lights must be chip free, the headlight must work both on main and dip beam, the
indicators must flash at a steady rate and the hazard lights must function correctly.
Steering and suspension condition, security and operation, including forks, mountings, controls and bearings. Before heading to the test centre, you should therefore ensure that the steering moves freely without drag and the handlebar does not hit the tank when the steering is fully turned lock to lock with the front wheel off the ground. The handlebars must be securely mounted, and the grips secure. A typical motorcycle MOT test will include checks on both the front and rear suspension. To pass, you will therefore require both to be in good order, with little play and no oil leaks.
Wheels and tyres. Statistics show that more than 25% of motorcycle MOT test failures are due to worn or faulty tyres. For a quick pass, you should therefore check that wheels are secure and free from cracks, and spokes if you have them are not corroded, broken or bent. Other things to check include that the front and rear wheels are properly aligned and that the tyres have sufficient depth of tread.
Frame must be free from cracks, damage, distortion or corrosion which is likely to affect the steering or brakes.
Brakes that work properly are important for obvious reasons. Our HBR MOT tester will therefore check all brake hoses for fluid leaks, bulges & cracking, also that disc brakes are properly mounted and free from cracks, and the pads or shoes are not over worn. If your motorbike has ABS warning lights, these will also need to be working properly.
Noise. All motorcycle MOT tests will include an assessment of the decibel level omitted by your exhaust.
A Motorcycle MOT certificate confirms that at the time of the test, without total dismantling, the vehicle met the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by UK law. It does not necessarily mean that the vehicle is roadworthy for the life of the certificate. The test does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.
As well as checking the parts mentioned above, our motorcycle MOT tester will also check that the chain or the belt does not have excessive slack, they will check the horn is of reasonable volume and a continuous single tone.
